Everything you need to Have for Twins

shower-for-twins

Hey friends! It’s been so long since I’ve written, but I wanted to share a post I’ve been planning for awhile : and that’s everything I would suggest picking up if you’re expecting twins. Noah and Jacob are now almost nine months old (where’d the time go!) and I’ve fully been in “twin mom mode” for awhile now.

I did so much research before the boys got here, and it’s SO hard to know what to do to prepare for the two babes to arrive! I wanted to put, in one full spot, everything that we are using and love when it to comes to twin life. I’ve left out anything we didn’t use (no swings here!)

Changing Stations

Depending on your house setup, you’re going to want a couple different diaper stations around the house. I’m in a colonial, and we have three changing stations: the living room, the playroom, and their bedroom. PSA: you will be changing a LOT of diapers those first few months. I want to say we go through 200+ a week right now. When friends and family ask what you need – always say diapers!

Feeding Stations

When you’re not changing diapers, you’ll probably be feeding. Personally, I chose to bottle feed after the first week, so that’s what this section is tailored to. If you are breast feeding, you are my hero!

  • Bottles, drying rack one, drying rack two (we have both)
  • Baby Brezza – Some people aren’t about this product, but we love it. We have two because the boys are on different formulas. Do yourself a favor and get a few extra spare parts as well.
  • Burp Cloths – You are going to want a LOT. Seriously. If you feel like you have too many, you don’t. Stock up.
  • Twin Z Pillow– Get this on your registry NOW! It’s a must for twins. It took the boys awhile to grow into it, but if you lay a blanket over the top, you’ll find it easy to get the babies on top and feed them.
  • Dock a tot – We have these in the living room for feeding and lounging as well.

Travel Items

  • UppaBaby Vista Stroller – We bought this stroller when Ana was born, and I was SO relieved we had it when we found out we were having twins. It easily converts to a double and has a HUGE basket underneath. If you can, get the parent organizer and cup holder too. We Bought Ana this umbrella stroller since she isn’t using the Vista anymore, which is great quality for under $100.
  • UppaBaby Mesa Car Seat – easily hooks into the stroller for easy outings.
  • Diaper Bag – I LOVE our diaper bag! It’s huge but doesn’t look bulky. We can easily bring all the items for all three babies.

Sleep and Lounge

We did NOT use swings for the twins. We have this one in the basement from Ana…but never broke it out. We also had a 4moms that a friend lent us, but never used it. My advice would be to skip the swing and invest in the Baby Bjorn or DockaTot instead – you’ll use them way, way, way more.

  • Baby Bjorn Bouncers – Okay, bare with me. When I had Ana I didn’t see how anyone could possibly justify a $200 bouncer. With the twins, I borrowed one from a friend and bought the second… and they are AMAZING. I had two cheap $30 bouncers for Ana, and they were a total bust. We’ve used the Baby Bjorn’s EVERY DAY since they have come home, and there is still so much time they can be in them. They have been worth every penny and I would absolutely have paid for a second one in hindsight. Get these on your registry!
  • Bassinet
  • Hatch Sound Machine – I love these, both of our nursery’s have them
  • Dock a tot

Misc Items

  • Labels – These things are the best, waterproof for the dishwasher, and very cute too – you’ll want to label everything and having these handy is great.
  • Muslin Blankets
  • Favorite Pacifiers
  • Nursery Camera – Love how this one will show both screens at the same time to easily view both babies.
  • Portable Sound Machine – Get this! Hook it to your bassinet when the babies are in your room, and great for travel. We have one for Ana and one for the boys.
  • Shusher

How Am I Going to Afford Twins?!

After finding out we were expecting twins, I was up all night worrying about ALL THE COSTS coming with two extra little bodies. I’m not going to sugarcoat it: having twins is expensive. Between daycare, formula, diapers, two of everything – it’s costly. Here’s some tips to survive year one:

  • Borrow – We had singles of a lot of things, but we borrowed many of the big ticket items. A second bassinet, a second car seat, a second baby Bjorn…all came from friends who didn’t have infants and were generous enough to let us use their goodies. People are going to offer to help – take them up on it. A LOT Of these items you aren’t using for more than a year – save your money for other things.
  • Have a Sprinkle or Diaper Party – I opted to have a diaper party instead of a sprinkle. We had a get together for all of our friends, and everyone brought a box (or several!) of diapers to gift us. It’s been a lifesaver these first few months – we have rarely had to buy diapers!
  • Start Shopping Early – You’ll have several months before these babies get here – slowly start building your twin stash. Every month I would make a large Amazon order with necessities. It helped to split the costs so I wasn’t paying for everything all at once towards the end. If you aren’t having a diaper party, start picking up a pack at every grocery trip and storing them. If you plan on formula feeding, pick up what you hope to feed them (but don’t go too crazy – we ended up having 30 cans of regular formula and one baby who needs sensitive!)
  • Breathe! You will figure this out. Twins are expensive, but make your plans, rely on the help you have, and I promise you will figure it out!
