I hate to break it to you mamas…but if you came to this article looking for the holy grail for how to always feel like you are the mom who does it all flawlessly, this is NOT the blog for you. The mom game is hard – it is never ending, thankless, and pure exhaustion. Sure – it’s also the most rewarding thing you will EVER do, and those kiddos make it all worth it. But it’s hard to not feel like it’s you against the world most of the days!

These are all QUICK things you can do to help feel like you’re holding your own in the mom game…for at least five minutes, until the next thing rolls around. Full disclaimer: I do not do these things every day, week, sometimes even month! But I WILL tell you, doing these small, quick things will make you feel a LITTLE more in control of your life and like you’ve accomplished something worthwhile.

Feel on Top of the World (for 5 minutes)

  • Stay on top of the laundry: Oh my God, the LAUNDRY. It never ends. EVER. Is there anything more disheartening than seeing piles of laundry in your bedroom, the kids room, in front of the machines….it’s such a stressor to me…and to EVERY MOM I KNOW! There is no secret sauce to staying on top of the laundry, but all I can tell you is that you will feel SO much better if you are doing a load or two every day. I legit was the WORST with with for years: I would wait until my laundry piled up in hampers to the point of needing to spend an entire. day doing 5 loads, and then another three days putting it away. I have made it my goal to have this NOT be the case anymore – and so far, it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Doing one small load of Ana and my clothes every other day has been such a game changer. It takes less than five minutes to put away since the loads are small, and everything is so much neater. Throw in a load of towels once a week, sheets… and you are feeling like a mom who can do no wrong. (Disclaimer: Rick does his own laundry. I don’t think he trusts me to not ruin his clothes 😛 )
  • Clean the Kitchen at Night: I’m usually pretty on top of this for the most part. I really can’t stand having a dirty kitchen overnight. Load the dishwasher (and run it, if it needs it!), empty the sink, and spray the countertops to wipe down. Cleaning the kitchen does NOT take long, but it help TREMENDOUSLY to make your house feel clean and comfortable, and it won’t stress you out the next morning.
  • Have your Kids Help Clean Up Their Toys: Easier said than done? Maybe, but you can absolutely have your kids pitch in every night before bed to help tidy up. I am NOT someone who believes your house shouldn’t look like you have kids that live there, but they can certainly pick toys off the floor if they’re old enough. Right now, Ana is young enough that picking up toys is a game every night – she helps to put everything back in their bins and packages before we go upstairs for the night.
  • Create a Stockpile of Must-Haves: Is there ANYTHING more stressful than going to pack your kids lunch for daycare and realizing you’ve run out of snacks? Seriously, we run through staple items like goldfish, mini muffins, and fruit cups faster than we can ever believe. Creating a huge stockpile has been a lifesaver. I buy a lot of these things in bulk from Amazon or BJ’s, along with other necessities (diapers, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc) and store in a makeshift basement pantry. Definitely recommend looking into doing this to save yourself the stress and late night/early morning grocery runs (been there, done that – we all know it’s the worst!

Other Quick To-Do’s to Feel Put Together

  • Keep all the beds made
  • Keep your office desk or workstation organized
  • Always keep the diaper stations stocked (another thing that is the WORST to realize too little too late)
  • Create monthly auto-deliveries for things like dog food and medicine, hygiene products, etc
  • Have running appointments for hair, dentist, groomers, etc so you don’t have to scramble last minute in an emergency
  • Have a calendar on your fridge with monthly reminders
  • Keep a running grocery list on the fridge, too.
  • Wash your face at night and exfoliate a few times a week
