Cake Smash Photos & Recap
Happy February, readers! Today is LONG overdue, but something I really wanted to share – a recap and photo log of Ana June’s Cake Smash photoshoot.
Now, Ana turned one back in the end of September, so at this point she is a beautiful and lively toddler at 16 months old! She is so different than these photos even show, which just truly shows how fast time flies when you have a young child. Just the same, I know so many moms look for Cake Smash information and inspiration, so I wanted to be able to share my favorite photos and thoughts on the day.
Was the Cake Smash Photoshoot worth it? I think this will vary person to person, but for me – yes, it was. The memories of this day are so special, and the photos are something we can treasure forever. Any mom will agree that time becomes VERY apparent when you have a child. Every day is a reminder of how fast the world moves and how quickly your babies will age. Ana will never be that sweet age of one again! These photos are fun, energetic, and just a sweet reminder to cherish the special moments. I just love them.
Preparing for your Cake Smash Photoshoot
Select a Photographer: This is the first thing to look into, and you’re going to want to start early! We used Torrent Photography out of Syracuse NY for our Cake Smash. One of our close friends had used and recommended her, and I loved her photos. We booked the photos to be done about 3 weeks before her first birthday – we reserved that time probably a month before that even happened, so Ana was 9-10 months old when we began the process of getting the photoshoot booked.
Get a Cake: This is kind of “duh”, but give some thought to your cake and order early. With our photoshoot, I knew that I wanted to have our dog, Mia, present in some photos. Luckily, Torrent was fine and encouraged us bringing furry friends along! I went on the hunt for a dog friendly cake and ended up just choosing a VERY simple, two layer vanilla cake with a whipped cream frosting. Our great friend Sabrina who owns Ohh Sugar! in Central New York made this cake for us, and it was the perfect supplement for OUR vision of the cake smash photos.
Get Your Outfits: Whatever your vision is, make sure to plan ahead! I was NOT the best at this, and it left some last minute scrambling. The one outfit I knew for certain I wanted Ana in is the one she’s wearing in her cake shots with the fun rainbow tulle – it made such a fun pop of color!
Final Thoughts & Recap
The day of, it was POURING rain – but we were able to get some beautiful photos of the family, Ana, Ana AND Mia…and more. I think the big thing to remember with a cake smash or any infant/toddler photoshoot is to let your kid go with it! Ana was an absolute ham in front of the camera, and every photo is unstaged, unprompted, and a reflection of her personality, which makes the photos so special to save and share.
Overall, I’m so happy we made the choices we did and how the photos turned out! What do you guys think? Have you had a cake smash, or are you planning to? Drop me a line in the comments or to me email: hello@junediaries.com .
